Today was a hot day across the district with foretasted heat indexes in the mid-90s for most of the coverage area. With the daytime heating in the afternoon came the popcorn variety of showers and thunderstorms across the coverage area.
The first set of storms about 3:00 PM, that was indicated from a weather spotter in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. The NWS issued a Special Weather Statement for Southeastern Allegheny County and Westcentral Westmoreland Counties. These storms produced 40 MPH Winds and Pea Size Hail.
An Hour and 45 Minutes Later,. an Severe Thunderstorm Warning came across the NOAA weather radio for the Mid-Mon Valley Section of our coverage area. This included NW Fayette, SW Westmoreland and SE Washington Counties, specifically Monessen, Belle Vernon and Fayette City in our western edge of the Coverage Area. This system brought Quarter Sized Hail and 60 MPH wind gusts in this storm. The warning was allowed to expire at its assigned expiration time a half an hour from its issuance.
Approximately five minutes later, a Flood warning was issued for the above affected areas and also included Central Washington County. This was due to the slow speed of the storms and the heavy downpours contained in them.
As the expiration notice came across the wire from the NWS, the rain came by my location and brought a light-to-standard rain and 20-25 MPH wind Gusts. The Squall, about 10 minutes in duration, brought 0.03 inches of rain to the station .
About 542, a Severe thunderstorm, again with 60 MPH wind gusts and quarter size hail took place at the far reaches of our coverage area in Greene County, specifically the Jefferson and Clarksville areas. About 10 minutes later a weather bulletin came across the NOAA weather Radio for a Severe Thunderstom Warning for NW Greene, SE Washington and West Central Fayette Counties, including the Brownsville, Republc, New Salem Areas As the storms moved on and weakened, the warning was cancelled about ten minutes earlier than assigned.
The remainder of the evening was warm and muggy.
